2013 Summer Institute
The 2013 Morehead Writing Project Summer Institute wrapped up June 28. Led by Summer Institute Co-Director Brandie Trent and Summer Institute Coordinator Brandis Carlson, 11 Fellows spent four weeks together growing as writers, teachers, leaders, and researchers.
The group enjoyed visits from former Summer Institute Co-Director Liz Prather, Kentucky author George Ella Lyon, and former Returning Fellow Mandy Lawson. In addition, the Fellows attended the Morehead State University English Teacher Connection Conference as well as the Kentucky Writing Project’s Literacy and Technology Inquiry Project Summer Academy held at Morehead State University.
Participating in the MWP Summer Institute are: Jessica Feltner of Powell County Middle School, Dustin Grooms of Mason County High School, Suzanne Haberek of Paul Blazer High School (Ashland Independent Schools), Ben Hawkins of Easter Carter High School, Michelle Hilderbrandt of McBrayer Elementary School in Rowan County, Mallory Howard of Montgomery County Intermediate School, Natasha Mora of Botts Elementary School in Menifee County, Lori Staggs of East Carter Middle School, Melanie Thompson of Ward Elementary School in Fleming County, Megan Thurman of Lewis County High School, and Leslie Workman of Fleming County High School.
Trent teaches at Fleming County High School and Carlson teaches at Straub Elementary School in Mason County. Also participating were MWP In-Service Co-Director Jared Salyers and Outreach Co-Director Tim Reding, both of Morehead State University.
The 2013 Morehead Writing Project Summer Institute Fellows held a Writing Showcase on Friday, June 28, in the Adron Doran University Center on the campus of Morehead State University (see June 28 storify) and created a digital anthology of their work: Pickin’ Our Switches.

Bath County: Leslie Workman will teach English at Bath County High School in the Fall
Carter County: Ben Hawkins will teach French and humanities at East Carter High School, Lori Staggs will teach English and language arts at East Carter Middle School, and Melanie Thompson will teach first grade at Tygart Creek Elementary School.
Fleming County: Brandie Trent will teach English at Fleming County High School in the Fall. Leslie Workman formerly taught English at Fleming County High School and Melanie Thompson formerly taught at Ward Elementary School.
Jessamine County: Suzanne Habarek will teach math at East Jessamine High School in the Fall.
Lewis County: Megan Thurman will teach eighth grade English at Lewis County Middle School in the Fall.
Mason County: Dustin Groom will teach English at Mason County High School and Brandis Carlson will teach kindergarten at Straub Elementary in Mason County.
Menifee County: Natasha Mora will teach fourth grade at Botts Elementary in Menifee County in the Fall.
Montgomery County: Mallory Howard will teach sixth grade English Language Arts at Montgomery County Intermediate School in the Fall.
Powell County: Jessi Feltner will teach sixth grade English Language Arts at Powell County Middle School in the Fall.
Rowan County: Michelle Hildebrandt will teach kindergarten at McBrayer Elementary School in Rowan County in the Fall.
