When the Kentucky Council of Teachers of English gathers in Lexington for their annual conference, two Morehead Writing Project teacher-leaders will be among those receiving annual awards. Continuity Co-Director Brandis Carlson will be honored as the KCTE Elementary Teacher of the Year. LRNG Coordinator Misty Johnson will be honored as the KCTE Administrator of the Year.
The 2018 KCTE Elementary Teacher of the Year, Carlson teaches at Straub Elementary in Mason County. She currently serves as the Morehead WP Continuity Co-Director with the responsibility for helping Morehead WP teacher-leaders stay connected to the site. She has also served as a leader for the Invitational Summer Institute for several years. In addition, Carlson leads a Global Graffiti Summer Writing Camp at Straub Elementary. “Brandis is an amazing teacher-leader who has demonstrated leadership in her school and district,” said Morehead WP Site Director Deanna Mascle. “Her contributions to the Morehead Writing Project are innumerable, but one of her consistent strengths is her ability to think about the spectrum of teaching at every level and across content areas.”
The 2018 KCTE Administrator of the Year, Johnson is the Assistant Principal at Bath County Middle School. She currently coordinates the LRNG Innovators Challenge grant that she wrote with language arts teacher Vickie Moriarity and site director Deanna Mascle. The grant is tranforming the school into a makerspace as every student from sixth to eighth grade is involved in researching, planning, and creating a passion project intended to bridge the gap between school and career while also benefiting their community. Prior to taking her current position, Johnson was an English teacher at West Carter High School. “Misty cares deeply about her students and is passionate about creating opportunities for them to realize their full potential and reach for their dreams,” Mascle said. “This grant and all the components she has used to implement it are evidence of her drive to support her students.”
Carlson and Johnson will be recognized during the luncheon at the annual Kentucky Council of Teachers of English Conference on Saturday, Feb. 24th at the Embassy Suites in Lexington, KY.
