Pack and Smith represent MWP at state conference
Saturday, September 12th, 2009Morehead Writing Project teacher-consultants Wendy Pack of Fleming County High School and Stephanie Smith of Montgomery County High School represented the Morehead Writing Project at the annual Kentucky Writing Project State Network Conference on schoolwide literacy held Saturday, Sept. 12, at the University of Louisville.
Pack led a session about poetry writing titled “The Fruits of Poetry” and Smith co-presented “Beyond the Holocaust: Making Critical Connections to Social Justice”.
The Morehead Writing Project (MWP) has worked to improve student writing achievement by improving the teaching of writing in Eastern Kentucky schools for more than two decades. MWP is a federally- and state-funded professional development program whose mission is to help Eastern Kentucky public school teachers become better writers and writing teachers. MWP is affiliated with the National Writing Project, the Kentucky Writing Project, the Kentucky Department of Education, and Morehead State University.
At the core of the MWP is an invitational four-week Summer Institute, open to a select group of Eastern Kentucky’s best public school teachers. All teaching methods are interactive and interdisciplinary. Additionally, the MWP provides year-round contracted and grant-funded outreach programs and teacher training to Eastern Kentucky schools in Morehead State University’s 22-county service region. All MWP programs align with Kentucky Core Content and Program of Studies curricula and the Kentucky Professional Development Standards. As a National Writing Project affiliate, MWP qualifies as an exemplary professional development provider by No Child Left Behind regulations.

Call For Proposals
Friday, September 11th, 2009The Morehead Writing Project, sponsor of the Writing Eastern Kentucky Conference, invites proposals for presentations addressing the topics of writing and the teaching of writing.
The sessions will be one hour in length and can focus on an audience of teachers or writers. Presenters will receive free registration for the conference and a stipend of $100.
Proposals should include a brief description of your workshop, intended audience, and any special needs (projector, etc.).

WriteStart Workshop For High School Seniors
Saturday, September 5th, 20093-hour workshop covering college application letters and essays plus scholarship applications for high school seniors and their parents.
The Morehead Writing Project is presenting workshops to help high school seniors:
- craft effective, well-written college application essays,
- write correctly formatted, eye-pleasing cover letters,
- and locate resources for scholarship money.
Seniors can come to the workshop by themselves ($15) or they can bring a parent ($25 and includes student). Each workshop will be led by current high school English teachers who have completed the Morehead Writing Project’s Summer Institute.

Kentucky Writing Project Conference Sept. 12
Thursday, September 3rd, 2009Wendy Pack, Stephanie Smith, and Risha Mullins will present at the Kentucky Writing Project Conference on schoolwide literacy. The conference also features Kentucky Poet Laureate Gurney Norman and will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, in Louisville. 30 sessions offer a lot of choices!
