Kentucky Writing Project State Conference

The Kentucky Writing Project State Conference will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, at Morehead State University in conjunction with the Writing Eastern Kentucky Conference.

Kentucky Writing Project site directors are currently working with their teacher-consultants to prepare presentations for the state conference.

A block of rooms has been reserved at the Hampton Inn in Morehead. Reservations must be booked by Aug. 25.

Kentucky Writing Project Retreat

Regional Youth Writing Camp June 21-25

The Morehead Writing Project will host the Peterson Youth Writing Camp in Morehead and Pikeville this summer during the week of June 21-25. Students in grades 4-8 will explore place through writing.

The Pikeville High School location will be led by Lisa Wheeler and Rebecca King. The MSU location will be led by Abigail Thomas.

Registrations are due by May 31.

Literacy and Technology Inquiry Project

The Kentucky Writing Project 2010 summer academies are focused on using technology in ways that enhance student learning and literacy.

The academies are located around Kentucky and will be held in June.

The academies are applicable for all grade levels and offer 12 hours PD credit for just $50.

Teacher Leaders will demonstrate classroom projects integrating technology and engage participants in both learning the technology and designing applications that will fit their own teaching situations.

Holocaust and Social Justice Education Seminar

About Seminar

The Kentucky Writing Project State Network will host a Holocaust and Social Justice Education Seminar to be held June 25-27 in Elizabethtown.

Four Certified Holocaust Educators will guide participants through an interactive workshop using survivor testimony, primary source documents, and proven instructional materials designed to encourage students to find parallels between the social injustices of the Holocaust and their own experiences. Participants will interact with resources that promote students’ accountability for their own roles on the stage of social justice while meeting school-wide literacy goals.

Only 2 Morehead Writing Project Fellows will be accepted for the Seminar.

The deadline for applications is extended to May 21. Application

Writing Retreat: Taking Memory into Memoir

The Morehead Writing Project invites all MWP Fellows to a One-Day Writing Retreat on Saturday, May 8, 2010 from 9 am-3 pm at the Gateway Center for the Arts in Mt. Sterling.

Liz Mandrell will lead participants in a session entitled Taking Memory into Memoir, to be followed by ample writing time and an opportunity for feedback. There is a minimal registration fee of $15 which includes materials, breakfast, and lunch.

Fantastic Four: Achieving Proficiency on Open Responses

Be a super hero and learn how to use the “Fantastic Four” to achieve proficiency on Open Responses. The “Fantastic Four” is a rubric based, scaffold approach to guide student focus on the exact purpose of extended response questions. It teaches students to analyze questions and apply the general scoring guide in a specific process. This method is easy to use and has had proven results on end of the year CATS assessments. Through this training we will explore efficient ways to not only help your students demonstrate their knowledge of core content, but also how we can use open responses as a writing to learn instructional tool in the classroom.

This Saturday Series, Take 3, workshop is offered from 9 a.m. to noon for $20 on the following dates:

The Morehead Writing Project is offering a $2100 research and professional development fellowship for a select group of experienced, outstanding teachers who will participate in the Morehead Writing Project 2010 Summer Institute.

Who is eligible for this Fellowship?

· Former NWP Fellows interested in joining the MWP site leadership

· Former NWP Fellows interested in mentoring new fellows

· Former NWP Fellows interested in another opportunity to learn and grow

· Former NWP Fellows who went through the SI at another site

This year’s Summer Institute will take place June 7-July 2, 2010, daily 9 AM to 4 PM. Note: The week of June 7-11 will not require on campus participation. The required orientation is May 8, 2010.

On-Demand Writing: A Toolkit for Teachers
