Online Summer Institute

The Morehead Writing Project will offer its innovative Online Institute during Morehead State University’s 2024 Summer I session JUNE 10 – JULY 5, 2024. Participants can join the Online Institute as either Morehead State University students by enrolling in ENG/EDUC 608 or ENG/EDUC 609 as graduate students or registering with the Morehead Writing Project for 36 hours of professional development credit at a cost of $1,000 (partial scholarships are available through our literacy leadership program). In addition, teachers in our region may earn full PD scholarships through service. Contact Site Director Deanna Mascle or Summer Institute Co-Director Leslie Workman by January 2024 to learn more.

The four-week online program is offered asynchronously. Participants will be given the opportunity to begin working before the June 10 start date if they choose and can choose the days and times that suit their individual schedule to work on each week’s tasks.

The Online Summer Institute will offer the same program that the Morehead Writing Project has offered for the past decade: building a community to support the teacher as writer, reflective practitioner, researcher, and leader. Read about what teachers had to say about the 2021 Online Summer Institute and the 2020 Online Summer Institute.

Participants will work with Google tools, HyperDocs, Ungrading, Project-Based Learning, and have the opportunity to focus their work on solving a problem specific to their teaching context. The Online Summer Institute offers research-backed PD designed to fit the individual schedules and needs of educators. This professional development is approved by the Kentucky Department of Education and a wide range of professional development grants as a member of the National Writing Project network which makes this professional development right for teachers, teacher leaders, literacy coaches, supervisors of instruction, and administrators.

Teachers at any grade level and in any content area are welcome. Contact Morehead Writing Project Director Deanna Mascle (d.mascle@moreheadstate.edu) or Summer Institute Co-Director Leslie Workman (leslie.workman@fairview.kyschools.us) to learn more.

Mascle has served as site director since 2008 and has participated in one or two summer institutes every year. She is a writing instructor at Morehead State University although she has worked with writers from elementary school through adulthood. Workman is a former high school English teacher and current elementary school principal who has led both invitational and online summer institutes. In addition, Workman has led several Morehead Writing Project initiatives and served as a leader with both Kentucky Writing Project and National Writing Project initiatives.

These are the mentors and the professional learning community you are looking for no matter your content area, teaching level, or experience. The National Writing Project network is deep and wide!
