Are You A Teen Writer With A Story To Tell?

If you are – or know – a teen writer with a story to tell then you owe it to yourself to check out the Morehead Writing Project’s Power Your Story Online Summer Writing Camp

During Power Your Story teen writers will be guided through the process of crafting a long-form news story for publication while developing the comprehensive literacy and communication skills essential for college and professional success. Power Your Story can help teens develop new skills and enhance their writing as well as add new experiences and demonstrated expertise to their portfolio for college and scholarship applications.

“We are very excited about the publication opportunities available to our writers,” said Dr. Deanna Mascle, a former journalist and the director of the Morehead Writing Project. “The writers who join us will have the opportunity to explore a problem they are passion about to discover the available solutions; develop their voice and narrative writing style; and share the finished project with an audience. That is a very powerful experience.”

“Helping writers develop their voice and writing style is the heart of National Writing Project work,” said Sarah Webster, a high school journalism teacher and camp director. “We are so glad that we are able to offer this opportunity when so many other summer programs are not available.”

Teen writers can still register for the camp although time is running out. The first week of camp starts Monday, June 1.

Power Your Story Young Adult Literacy Lab is open to high school writers (rising eighth graders through graduating seniors) from Kentucky and beyond and will focus on solutions journalism. Teen writers will choose an overlooked and misunderstood issue touching their community and will be guided through the process of crafting a long-form news story for publication. Long-form journalism is a branch of journalism that generates longer and more in-depth articles than the typical news story. The camp is scheduled for the first two weeks in June. Young writers can attend either week or both if they choose:

  • Week 1 June 1-5
  • Week 2 June 8-12

Registration for the camp is $80 for one week or $150 for two weeks.

“Writers who are with us for the full two weeks will have time to develop their projects more fully and craft longer pieces,” Mascle said. “One week of camp will still be a great experience, but I suspect those writers who only attend one week will be sorry to miss out.”

Dr. Deanna Mascle of Morehead State University and Sarah Webster of Gallatin High School will provide non-evaluative support for the camp M-F through a combination of morning meetings (no more than 90 minutes), daily writing prompts and activities the writers will work on independently, and small group workshops in the afternoon or evening.
