During the 2022-2023 school year, the Morehead Writing Project Leadership Team has focused on rebuilding our core programming to fit within our new education context while continuing to support preservice and practicing teachers as well as the writers of our region. Now we want to hear from you!

Morehead Writing Project Site Director Deanna Mascle will host two open office hours via Zoom at 7 p.m. ET Monday, April 10 and 17 to to chat with anyone who answered yes to these questions! Our current teacher leaders who have ideas about serving our teacher and writer communities or just want to say hello are welcome to stop by! Email Deanna if you cannot attend one of these sessions and we can set up a conversation.
Our 2023 Calendar
April 2023 is National Poetry Month and will include wrapping up our Spring 2023 Small Poems, Great Writers work with an anthology and a celebration for our Scholastic Contest winners. Reach out ASAP if you are interested in participating in either program!
June 2023 will include both the Summer Arts Academy (June 11 – 17 – encourage your teen writers to apply now to get discount and scholarship!) and the Online Summer Institute (June 12-July 7 – learn how the literacy leadership program can benefit you and your school).
Fall 2023 we will once again offer the Eastern Kentucky Scholastic Contest and we still have a budget to offer contest scholarships and prizes for participating teen writers in Bath, Boyd, Breathitt, Carter, Clark, Elliott, Estill, Fleming, Floyd, Greenup, Harlan, Johnson, Knott, Lawrence, Lee, Lewis, Leslie, Letcher, Magoffin, Martin, Mason, Montgomery, Menifee, Morgan, Nicholas, Owsley, Pike, Perry, Powell, Robertson, Rowan, and Wolfe counties. We are seeking leaders to support teachers and their teen writers as well as work with Scholastic Adjudication Coordinator Liz Prather in December-January. Stipends for this work (leadership and adjudication) are available!
Our Goals
The Morehead Writing Project, an affiliate of the National Writing Project, has the following goals:
- Identify and support great teacher-leaders to improve the teaching of writing via annual summer institute and other programs
- Evangelize for the power and magic of writing as an intrinsic good as well as a powerful force for life, learning, and comprehensive literacy by offering programs for writers of all ages
For 2023-24, our emphasis will be:
- re-establishing our path to leadership for our teacher-leaders
- cultivating our relationships with pre-service teachers at Morehead State University and new teachers in our service region.
