MWP Teachers Help Students Earn National Podcasting Honors

Morehead Writing Project alum Lindsay Johnson and Dakoda Bowling, teachers at Rowan County High School, worked with their Junior English classes to produce podcasts for NPR’s Student Podcast Challenge.

The podcast challenge received 6,000 entries. Only two podcasts could win but there were 280 honorable mentions – including six for Kentucky. Two of those six honorable mentions were student podcasts from Rowan County and Lindsay Johnson’s classes. The honorable mentions include:

  • Ansley Perryman’s “I Ain’t Stupid,” which sought to educate listeners on unfair stereotypes about Appalachia
  • A group of students who hang out in the WalMart parking lot produced “Tales from the WalMart Parking lot” also got several on-air mentions.

Leeann Akers and Morehead Public Radio helped students create their podcasts and interviewed Johnson about the experience.
