NDOW-WEKY A Success

Morehead State University celebrated National Day On Writing, an event intended to celebrate writing and writers sponsored by the National Writing Project and National Council of Teachers of English, for the first time this year.

The Morehead Writing Project joined forces with Morehead State University’s Camden-Carroll Library, Center for Leadership and Professional Development, Center for Regional Engagement, and Tutoring and Learning Center, as well as Coffeetree Books to offer Eastern Kentucky educators and students the opportunity to join events marking the fifth annual National Day On Writing sponsored by the National Writing Projectand National Council of Teachers of English.

The local even spanned five days beginning with the official National Day On Writng on Oct. 20 and continuing through Oct. 24. Teachers, students, and writers throughout the region participated online as well as in Morehead by contributing to graffiti walls set up in the library, TLC, and Coffeetree Books. The event culminated with a Teen Writers Day Out Writing Marathon in the Button Drill Room attended by 139 teens from Bath, Martin, and Montgomery counties.

Each day offered a new discussion prompt and a new creative writing prompt (see overview National Days on Writing at Morehead State University and throughout Eastern Kentucky).

Daily writing discussion topics included:

  • What does writing mean to you?
  • How do you use writing to make connections?
  • Why do you write?
  • What do you write?
  • Celebrate writing in Eastern Kentucky

Daily creative writing prompts included:

Writers throughout Eastern Kentucky and from as far away as Texas participated in discussions and creative writing challenges on Facebook and Twitter. We counted 111 Twitter accounts posting 4.85 Tweets per person over the five days for a total of 534 Tweets using our #WEKY hashtag.
