The Morehead Writing Project will offer its eighth annual Online Summer Institute to educators in all content areas and all levels of education this summer. As the Online Summer Institute is completely online and 100% asynchronous educators throughout the United States (or the world) are invited to apply.
“We created this option to better serve the teachers in our region who could not commit to a month-long face-to-face program on our campus, but over the years we have served educators from around the country who do not have access to a National Writing Project Summer Institute in their region,” said Site Director Dr. Deanna Mascle. “This diversity has really increased the opportunity to learn and grow for everyone involved.”
The goal of the National Writing Project is to improve writing and learning for all learners because we recognize the importance of writing for personal growth, professional achievement, and community leadership:
Writing is essential to communication, learning, and citizenship. It is the currency of the new workplace and global economy. Writing helps us convey ideas, solve problems, and understand our changing world. Writing is a bridge to the future.
As a result, the core mission of the Summer Institute, which introduces educators to National Writing Project methods, is to help teachers grow as community members, writers, reflective practitioners, researchers, and leaders.
The National Writing Project’s professional development leadership is well respected throughout the international education community. In addition, the Kentucky Department of Education recognizes the value of our work and as such we are an endorsed program for the Kentucky Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy Grant.
The Online Summer Institute runs concurrent with two graduate English classes offered by Morehead State University and so can be taken for either professional development credit (36 hours for $1000) or three or six graduate credit hours .
Liz Prather, the author of Project-Based Writing and a writing teacher at the School for Creative and Performing Arts in Lexington, KY, will lead the Online Summer Institute with Dr. Mascle.
