Teen Writers: Local and Virtual Events Planned

Calling all Eastern Kentucky teen writers! The Morehead Writing Project is offering three writing marathons just for teen writers in July. Mason County High School teacher Eric Morris and Fleming County High School teacher Alora Chesney Jones will lead groups of teen writers to explore Flemingsburg, Maysville, and Morehead. The writing events will kick off the Power Your Story teen writing programs that will be offered at Bath County, Fleming County, Mason County, and Rowan County high schools in the Fall. This work is part of the National Writing Project’s MacArthur Civic Journalism Grant program. Morehead WP was eligible for this grant due to participation in previous MacArthur Journalism grants.

The Eastern Kentucky marathons will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the cost per session is $10. Writers will begin:

  • July 17 @ Fleming County Public Library
  • July 24 @ Mason County Public Library
  • July 31 @ Rowan County Public Library

In addition, teen writers (and adult writers) can join teen and adult writers in the virtual writing marathon offered by the National Writing Project: Write Across America. Free 90-minute marathons are offered via Zoom every Tuesday in July from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Together writers explore a different location in the country then write and share their inspirations in small groups. The Tuesday, July 9, event will be designed and hosted by a teen writer from Mobile, Alabama! Sign up here for Write Across America or join the National Writing Project Write Now Teacher Studio for invitations to the July 16 Stop in New Mexico, July 23 Stop in Maine, and July 30 Stop in Kansas. Check out the writing invitation used for the July 2 Stop in South Dakota.

Teen writers from Bath County, Fleming County, Mason County, and Rowan County high schools are encouraged to fill their writing notebooks this summer as this fall Seth Thatcher, Alora Chesney Jones, Eric Morris, and Lindsay Johnson will help their students create (and publish!) nonfiction multi-media stories alongside teen writers in Arkansas, California, Kansas, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. Morehead WP high school teachers interested in learning more about joining this work should reach out to Site Director Dr. Deanna Mascle as soon as possible.
