The Morehead Writing Project’s Train the Trainer Literacy Leadership Program supported literacy programs in school districts throughout our service region during the 2023-2024 school year as well as brought several new teachers into the National Writing Project community. Teachers interested in the transformative work of the National Writing Project and creating a writing event in their school should check out the Literacy Leadership Program and APPLY TODAY! This year’s programs include:
- Writing Buddy program at Camargo Elementary (in Montgomery County) with primary writers engaged in authentic writing to their families;
- Fairview Writing Day at Fairview Elementary (featured image) where fifth grade students created their own storybooks while working on supporting details, figurative/expressive language, argumentation and using evidence to support a claim, and description;
- Teen Literacy Night at Martin County Middle School (see below) where students in grades 6-8 wrote and shared together; and
- In addition, seven Eastern Kentucky writers taught by Morehead Writing Project teachers from Bath, Fleming, Mason, and Wolfe County high schools earned a collective four Gold Keys, three Silver Keys, and one Honorable Mention from the Eastern Kentucky Region of the 2024 Scholastic Writing Awards. Note: Next year Morehead WP high school teachers will be eligible to participate in our MacArthur Civic Journalism grant.

Praise to the teachers I have now
For making me feel love
I praise the teachers now
The teachers who showed me it is okay to care or love
Praise to my teachers now
For the love they have shown me
I wish they knew
Just how much I needed them
When I was almost a bottle in the ocean
Praise to the teachers
For showing me how to
Care,
Love,
Cry,
Learn,
And feel alive
Praise to the teachers I have now.
