2012 SI Fall Follow-Up

Brandie Trent and George McKee, the leaders of the 2012 Morehead Writing Project Summer Institute, welcomed the 2012 Summer Institute Fellows back to the campus of Morehead State University on Saturday, Sept. 8, for the Fall Follow-up.

The day featured professional development activities led by Returning Fellows Mandy Lawson of Sheldon Clark High School and Terry Lewis of Rowan County High School. In addition, the Fellows planned their sessions for the Writing Eastern Kentucky Conference under the guidance of In-Service Co-Director Jared Salyers and Outreach Co-Director Tim Reding.

The follow-up also included time spent writing and meeting with writing groups as well as discussion of the inquiry projects the Fellows are pursuing in their individual classrooms. This discussion was led by Site Leader Deanna Mascle.

The 2012 MWP SI Fellows include: Diana Conyers Goodpaster of Owingsville Elementary in Bath County; Megen Gearhart of Olive Hill Elementary in Carter County; Wesley Cooper of Fleming County High School; Brittany Moore of Lewis County Middle School; Mandy Lawson of Sheldon Clark High School in Martin County; Christi Billings of Powell County Middle School; Lindsay Ellis of Rowan County High School, Melissa Barnett Fickey of Tilden Hogge Elementary, Tiffanie Helterbrand of Tilden Hogge Elementary, Terry Lewis of Rowan County High School, and Misty Litton of Rowan County High School, all in Rowan County.

The 2012 MWP SI Leadership includes Brandie Trent of Fleming County High School; George McKee of EP Ward Elementary in Fleming County; Deanna Mascle, Tim Reding, and Jared Salyers, all of Morehead State University.

Successfully completing a Summer Institute and follow-up year is the first step toward joining the National Writing Project (NWP) network. More than 3,000 teachers joined the National Writing Project network in 2012. Fellows are chosen for the SI following a competitive application and interview process. The SI and Fellowships are funded by grants from the U.S. Department of Education and Kentucky Department of Education.
