Join the Morehead Writing Project on this April Fool’s Day (2017) for a day jam-packed with writing excitement including Mad-Cap Writing, Eckphrastic poetry, and a session with the Red House Writers that includes both writing prompts and writing group tips.
Our day will open with Mad-Cap Writing and the afternoon will include an eckphrastic poetry writing tour of the Kentucky Folk Art Center led by poet Joel Peckham and a double session with the Red House Writers.
Peckham is an Assistant Professor of Regional Literature and Creative Writing at Marshall University. A scholar of American Literature and a creative writer as well as a former Fulbright Scholar, his reviews, essays, scholarly articles, and poetry have been published in numerous journals throughout the United States and Canada.
The Red House Writers are a writing group that formed through their affiliation at Marshall University and have been meeting in Huntington, West Virginia, since summer 2011. Members include Mary Moore, Rachael Peckham, S. Diane Wellman, and Marie Manilla. Their writing includes poetry, novels, short stories and creative nonfiction. Their members have won awards, published books, and their work has appeared in literary journals, the latter including Tupelo Quarterly, Birmingham Poetry Review, Still: The Journal, Prairie Schooner, Mississippi Review, Calyx, Poetry and others.
Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Kentucky Folk Art Center (102 West 1st St. in Morehead) and the writing retreat will kick off at 9 a.m. We will break for lunch on our own at 11:30 a.m. but the Fuzzy Duck is offering us a soup/sandwich special. We will wrap up our day with a reading and share out at 4:30.
Registration for the Writing Retreat is $50 and does not include lunch. All participants will receive a notebook and pen and enough writing to make anyone giddy with glee. Teachers will receive six hours of professional development credit for the day.
